"The Story of An Hour"
"The Story of An Hour" by Kate Chopin is an easy read and quite interesting. Mrs. Mallard seems to be stuck in a relationship that she doesn't want to be a part of. She was excited to learn her husband had died and for her it was like a new life was going to beginning. At that time divorcing someone wasn't as common and was seen as bad by elderly folks. So she stayed and suffered silently but when she knew he was gone she felt freed.
It seems to me the relationship wasn't working anymore and she was unhappy. With the news of her husbands passing it felt like a weight had been lifted from her. "She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life." As she realized that the new spring life was coming I believe she thought it meant a new life for her as well. Mrs. Mallard was able to feel free for a moment, but when she saw her husband walking into the house she gave up and died. It killed her to see her husband because she was so excited for her new life but it wasn't going to happen since there he was. It was an interesting story to read because we have no backstory of why she felt the way she did but we still are able to imagine why she felt like that and the reasons for it.

I like that you mentioned that she felt like "a new life was beginning" and the reflection in "new spring life" because I noted the same thing when I was reading. I think it's also worth nothing that we, the audience, don't even get to know her first name until almost the end of the story. Her ties to her husband seemed to have been cut at this point. Good points!
ReplyDeleteI would not say, "she was excited to learn that her husband had died" but more like she was in disbelief of the news. It was the beginning of the end for her at that point. I do agree with the sense of freedom she felt at that moment of knowing things ended right there and then. Good insight.
ReplyDeleteit was an enjoyable read. this story was easy to follow and understand. one line that stood out to me was, "..as a child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dreams." I immediately saw the picture and felt more drawn into the story. it carried a tone of confession and acceptance.
